Remembering Cory: A Life of Joy, Strength, and Love
Cory’s story is one of resilience, determination, and an infectious zest for life. Cory was born with Down syndrome, severe bilateral congenital cataracts, and a speech condition later identified as infantile verbal dyspraxia. Despite these challenges, his mother, Trish, supported him tirelessly. Cory underwent cataract surgery, leaving him legally blind, yet he adapted and thrived. Initially nonverbal, he mastered over 100 signs by age four and, with the help of speech therapist Catherine Kennedy, overcame his speech difficulties speaking fluently, albeit with a slight stutter.
Cory lived an extraordinarily full life. In Australia, he participated in Special Olympics track and field and gymnastics, learned to ride a bike, and played T-ball. After moving to the USA, he continued with the Special Olympics, excelling in basketball, soccer, and track, even winning a bronze medal in a 100-meter dash. In high school, he embraced all activities, including prom, homecoming, and wrestling, where he became the team’s beloved cheerleader despite never winning a match.
Post-graduation, Cory worked part-time jobs at Goodwill, ACE Hardware, and the Port Washington Police Department, where he took pride in washing squad cars. Fearless and adventurous, he completed a polar plunge to raise funds for Special Olympics, skydived with his mother and grandmother, and embraced challenges with enthusiasm. A deep lover of country music, Cory connected emotionally with its lyrics.
His life included numerous medical challenges—cataract surgery, a shattered elbow, pneumonia, a hernia operation, and varicose vein removal. In November 2023, he was diagnosed with leukemia and spent much of the next year in the hospital’s H.O.T. unit, where his infectious personality made him a favorite among staff. After months of chemotherapy, he entered maintenance and returned to work, only to face a final battle with Covid and pneumonia in November 2024. Despite his compromised immune system, Cory fought until his passing on November 16, 2024.
Cory’s celebration of life drew over 500 attendees, reflecting his profound impact. Known for hugs, joy, and smiles, he left a legacy of resilience, love, and an indomitable spirit, now imagined as the “mayor of Heaven.”
Cory’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched. He was a true fighter, a beacon of happiness, and, as his best friend said, is now “sprinkling love and joy” in Heaven.
